Working on your own car allows you to save money by cutting out expensive labor costs and parts markups. It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about how your vehicle operates, building both skills and confidence. Plus, you get full control over the quality of the parts used and the work done, ensuring it’s done to your exact standards.

Mechanics
Taking your car to a mechanic for repairs certainly has its advantages, but there are some notable downsides. The biggest one is cost: labor charges can be expensive, often adding up to $100 or more per hour. On top of that, mechanics may mark up the price of parts, meaning you could pay a premium for components that are cheaper elsewhere.

There's also the potential for miscommunication or overselling; some shops might recommend unnecessary repairs or upsell you on services you don’t actually need. Additionally, you’re at the mercy of the mechanic's schedule—waiting for an appointment or for your car to be finished can take longer than you anticipate.
Some people also worry about trust—if you’re not familiar with the work being done, you might be skeptical about the quality of the repair or whether it's even necessary. Lastly, you’re losing the personal satisfaction and control that comes with doing the work yourself, and there’s always the risk of the mechanic missing something or making a mistake.
The Options
Rent-A-Lift
Renting a space with a lift and all the necessary tools offers several advantages. It improves safety and ease of work by giving you access to a car lift, so you can work comfortably underneath the vehicle.
The space is well-equipped with professional-grade tools, allowing you to tackle more complex repairs without needing to buy expensive equipment. You'll have more room to spread out, making the work environment less cramped and reducing the risk of mistakes. The proper setup helps you work faster and more efficiently, while also ensuring better results with fewer chances for errors.

Additionally, renting a space is often more cost-effective than buying tools you might only use occasionally, and it saves time compared to waiting for a mechanic. Lastly, working in a professional environment with the right equipment gives you the satisfaction of completing a repair with a higher level of confidence and quality.

The Parking Lot
Working on your car in a parking lot or driveway comes with several downsides. First, space and safety can be limited—there’s often not enough room to safely jack up the car or move around it freely, especially if you’re near traffic or on uneven pavement.
Weather is also a big issue; rain, snow, or extreme temperatures can interrupt your work and damage tools or parts. Noise and mess (like oil spills or scattered tools) might bother neighbors or violate lease or HOA rules.
Plus, you may lack access to essential equipment like a lift, torque wrench, or impact tools, making certain repairs harder or even unsafe. Lastly, there's always the risk of being mid-repair and realizing you need a part or tool—leaving your car immobile and stranded in an inconvenient spot.
